Episode #41: Steven Van Passel (University of Antwerp)

September 3, 2025

In this episode, we speak with Steven Van Passel, professor of environmental economics and vice-rector of Valorisation and Sustainability at the University of Antwerp.

Steven leads the Envecon research group, a multidisciplinary team that focuses on sustainability analyses in energy, food systems and the circular economy. With a background in the agricultural economy and years of experience in climate and nitrogen advisory committees, Steven offers a nuanced systemic perspective on how we can translate research into social impact.

We're talking about how to translate science into social value, why systems thinking is crucial, and what role technology can play in the sustainable transition of our built environment.

Sustainability is always about trade-offs, between the economy, environment, society, and even between now and the future. If we ignore that, we act too late or not at all.
